AESGP is publishing the following studies with comprehensive country profiles and summaries of the relevant EU legal provisions.

'Legal and Regulatory Framework for Herbal Medicines', 2nd edition, April 2010

Phytotherapy is one of the most ancient forms of medicine. It is still very much used today as shown by the World Health Organization’s estimate that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some aspects of their primary healthcare.

Based on this, AESGP has decided to expand the geographic coverage of the 2009 edition of its Legal and Regulatory Framework for Herbal Medicines. The new edition now covers 29 European countries as well as the main markets outside Europe: Australia, Canada, India, China, Japan and the United States. For each country, a specific chapter addresses the legal framework for herbal medicines, dossier requirements, evaluation process, product information, trade name, advertising, distribution as well as other useful information.  A more general part on EU herbal medicines legislation is also provided.

Copies of the study are available at a cost of 150 euro plus priority mail postage.

It states the maximum levels of vitamins and minerals currently allowed in food supplements in each country. It also contains a compilation of national rules on herbal ingredients and other substances, as well as a comparison of the derogations granted with regard to the use of other vitamin and mineral sources not listed in the Annex to the food supplements Directive.

The study gets its full operability through the electronic version attached to the printed version, complemented by an interactive comparison of how maximum levels and herbal and other ingredients are regulated in the 27 EU Member States.

Copies of the study are available at a cost of 250 euro plus priority mail postage.
